Alternative Ways to Capture an Impression

Sometimes you may need to capture an impression urgently, or simply don’t have time to wait for a Wax Impression Kit to arrive. The good news is that there are several easy alternative methods you can use at home to take a clear fingerprint, paw print, or nose print.

These techniques work beautifully and can be used to create your personalised impression print jewellery in sterling silver or 9ct gold. Once completed, your impressions can be safely sent to me and I’ll transform them into a lasting keepsake using the traditional lost wax casting process.

Below you’ll find three simple methods you can use to capture your impression, along with tips to help you achieve the best possible result.

1. Silicone Moulding Putty (Best Option)

Available online through retailers such as Amazon. Use a two-part moulding putty like Pebeo Gedeo Siligum or Pinkysil.

Steps:

  1. Mix the two parts of the silicone putty according to the product instructions (most brands use a 1:1 ratio).
  2. Once combined, firmly press the finger, paw, or nose into the putty to create a clear, well-defined impression.
  3. Allow the silicone to fully set before sending it to me (check your product instructions for setting time).

    Helpful tips:
  • Make sure to purchase silicone moulding putty, not a liquid silicone.
  • Check the working time of the silicone you purchase, as some putties begin setting within a few minutes. Have your person or pet ready before mixing.
  • You don’t need to hold the finger, paw, or nose in the putty. Simply press in and lift away to leave a clear impression.
  • Don’t worry about the size of the impression. For paws, it’s absolutely fine to capture the whole paw print.

2. Polymer Clay (Good Alternative)

Available at most craft stores such as Spotlight or Eckersley’s. Soft polymer clays like Sculpey or Fimo work beautifully and capture fine detail.

Steps:

  1. Condition the polymer clay by gently kneading it until soft and smooth.
  2. Firmly press the finger, paw, or nose into the clay to create a clear impression.
  3. Bake the clay according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Allow the clay to completely cool and harden before sending the impression to me.

Helpful tips:

  • Use a soft polymer clay like Sculpey or Fimo, as they capture finer detail more easily.
  • Avoid pressing too lightly - a firm press gives the best definition for casting.
  • Allow the clay to fully cool before packaging to prevent distortion.

3. Air-Dry Clay (Last Resort, But Still Works)

Available at most craft stores such as Spotlight or Eckersley’s. While not as detailed or durable as silicone putty or polymer clay, air-dry clay can still work in urgent situations.

Steps:

  1. Slightly moisten the clay if it feels dry to ensure a smooth surface.
  2. Firmly press the finger, paw, or nose into the clay to create an impression.
  3. Allow the clay to fully air dry and harden before sending it to me (this can take several hours or overnight, depending on thickness).

Helpful tips:

• Press firmly to achieve the clearest possible detail before the clay begins drying.

• Avoid moving or reshaping the clay once the impression is taken.

• Let it dry completely before packaging to prevent cracks or distortion.

• Handle gently — air-dry clay can be fragile once hardened.
